Note
When did Sarah ‎(Thornbury)‎ Donohoo die?

A Researcher's Note written by Melissa Finlay, 2015.

Patrick and Sarah had been married for 44 years by the time of the 1850 U.S. Census. The family consisted of 9 children ‎(7 living)‎, and 18 grandchildren by this time, all living in the Bardstown, Kentucky area. Both Patrick and Sarah were enumerated at age 64 ‎[1]‎. By the 1860 U.S. Census, Sarah no longer appeared in Patrick's household ‎[2]‎.

Due to her advancing age, a search for a death record was first on the to do list when she did not appear in the census. An index search of the Nelson County Death Records for 1852-1953, yielded nothing for Sarah Donohoo. However, a page by page search through the time period of 1852-1860 showed an incomplete record for a Donohoo, married female, resident of Bardstown, dying of psoas abscess in January 1853 ‎[3]‎. This record, while compelling, could not confirm the death of Sarah Donohoo.

A newspaper search in the Bardstown Herald for Sarah Donohoo in the 1850-1860 time range provided a confirming article:

January 20, 1853
"There have been two deaths from
Erysipelas in town since our last issue, Mr.
Lucius Melvin and Mrs. Donohoo, wife of
Mr. Patrick Donohoo. There are several
cases still on hand, but no new ones so
far as we have heard. In that part of the
county between Bardstown and Bloomfield,
which has been so severely afflicted, we un-
derstand that the disease has greatly abated."

The article does not give her first name, but states she was the wife of Patrick Donohoo ‎(the only Patrick Donohoo in town)‎. It confirms the death date in January 1853 ‎[4]‎. The death cause is different in each document, however the causes could be related to the same condition:

Erysipelas results from a streptococcus bacterial infection, as does psoas abscess. Erysipelas typically causes painful red skin rashes on the extremities, and is nicknamed St. Anthony's fire ‎[5]‎. Psoas abscess is a deeper infection of the streptococcus, usually in the lower back and upper thigh in the psoas muscle ‎[6]‎. This condition is also very painful. It is very likely that Sarah progressed from erysipelas of the skin to the deeper psoas abscess from the same infection, especially at her advanced age of 67.

Sarah ‎(Thornbury)‎ Donohoo died weeks before her 47th wedding anniversary. She left behind a husband, 7 living children and 18 grandchildren.

Life Sketch of Sarah ‎(Thornbury)‎ Donohoo

Written by Melissa Finlay, 2015.

Sarah Thornbury was born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in September 1786. On 10 October 1786, she was baptized at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Baltimore, with sponsors Joseph Hoch and Magdalen Burck. She was married to Patrick Donohoo, an Irish immigrant and cordwainer, on 22 February 1806, in the St. Peter's Catholic Church. In March of 1807, the couple welcomed their first child, a son they baptized Francis Thomas Donohoo. In May 1809, the family grew again, this time welcoming a daughter, Mary Magdalen. The second son, Michael, arrived in 1811, followed by John in September 1814. A fifth child and second daughter, Rosanna Margaret joined the family in August of 1816. During their years in Baltimore, the family lived in various residences in Baltimore while Patrick supported them by cordwaining or shoemaking.
Shortly after their fifth child was born, the family moved to Bardstown, Kentucky, a move of about 600 miles. Their purpose for the move is unknown, but there existed strong ties between the St. Peter's Church in Baltimore and the starting up of the St. Joseph's Cathedral in Bardstown at that time. Perhaps the Catholic church had an influence on their move in some way.
Four more children joined the Donohoo family in Bardstown, beginning with Catherine in 1818, Sarah Ann in 1827, Elizabeth in 1830 and finally John W in 1836. Patrick continued his cordwaining business in Bardstown. By 1830, the older Donohoo children began marrying and having children of their own.
The family experienced hardship as well, beginning in the early 1830s with the death of their third son, John. Their last son, born in 1836, was named after his brother: John W. In 1839, their daughter Margaret was widowed after only six months of marriage. In 1847, their daughter Catherine was left a widow with four small sons. In 1849, their daughter Sarah Ann was also widowed and moved back to her parents home with two small daughters. In early 1852, their daughter Elizabeth died at the age of only twenty one of Asiatic cholera.
Finally, in January of 1853, Sarah ‎(Thornbury)‎ Donohoo died of erysipelas which progressed to a psoas abscess. She was 67 years old and died just weeks before she and Patrick would have celebrated their 47th marriage anniversary. She left behind seven living children and at least 18 grandchildren. Less

Text: There have been two deaths from
Erysipelas in town since our last issue, Mr.
Lucius Melvin and Mrs. Donohoo, wife of
Mr. Patrick Donohoo. There are several
cases still on hand, but no new ones so
far as we have heard. In that part of the
county between Bardstown and Bloomfield,
which has been so severely afflicted, we un-
derstand that the disease has greatly abated.
