The Irish Cordwainer: Patrick Donohoo, 1786-1860s

Patrick Donohoo was born in Ireland around 1786 ‎[1]‎. His future wife, Sarah Thornbury, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in the same year ‎[2]‎. By 1806, Patrick had immigrated to Baltimore, and there met and married Sarah Thornbury on 22 February 1806 in the St. Peter's Catholic Church ‎[3]‎. Their marriage was announced in the Baltimore American Newspaper ‎[4]‎.

In March of 1807, the couple welcomed their first child, a son they baptized Francis Thomas Donohoo ‎[5]‎. In May 1809, the family grew again, this time welcoming a daughter, Mary Magdalen ‎[6]‎. The second son, Michael, arrived in 1811 ‎[7]‎, followed by John in September 1814 ‎[8]‎. A fifth child and second daughter, Rosanna Margaret joined the family in August of 1816 ‎[9]‎.

During their years in Baltimore, the family lived in various residences in Baltimore while Patrick supported them by cordwaining ‎(i.e. shoemaking)‎. In 1810, Patrick's address is 64 Pratt St. ‎[10]‎. By 1812, the family lives at N. Paca St WP ‎[11]‎. In 1814, their address is Saratoga near Charles ‎[12]‎.

Shortly after their fifth child was born, the family moved to Bardstown, Kentucky, a move of about 600 miles. Their purpose for the move is unknown, but there existed strong ties between the St. Peter's Church in Baltimore and the starting up of the St. Joseph's Cathedral in Bardstown at that time. Perhaps the Catholic church had an influence on their move in some way ‎[13]‎.

Four more children joined the Donohoo family in Bardstown, beginning with Catherine in 1818 ‎[14]‎, Sarah Ann in 1827 ‎[15]‎, Elizabeth in 1830 ‎[16]‎ and finally John W in 1836 ‎[17]‎. Patrick continued his cordwaining business in Bardstown ‎[18]‎. By 1830, the older Donohoo children began marrying and having children of their own ‎[19]‎.
The family experienced hardship as well, beginning in the early 1830s with the death of their third son, John. Their last son, born in 1836, was named after his brother: John W ‎[20]‎. In 1839, their daughter Margaret was widowed after only six months of marriage ‎[21]‎. In 1847, their daughter Catherine was left a widow with four small sons ‎[22]‎. In 1849, their daughter Sarah Ann was also widowed and moved back to her parents home with two small daughters ‎[23]‎. In early 1852, their daughter Elizabeth died at the age of only twenty one of Asiatic cholera ‎[24]‎. In January of 1853, Sarah ‎(Thornbury)‎ Donohoo died of erysipelas which progressed to a psoas abscess ‎[25]‎. She was 67 years old and died just weeks before she and Patrick would have celebrated their 47th marriage anniversary.
Patrick continued to live with his daughters Mary, Margaret Frilling and Sarah Ann Bishop, son John W, and granddaughters Sudie and Mary A Bishop ‎[26]‎. In 1856, the family experienced another terrible tragedy when a fire caught either in the back alley behind their home, or in the chimney of their home. The wind spread the fire so quickly that nothing could be saved, and it spread to many, many more dwellings, including the home of Catherine Donohoo Turner, daughter of Patrick, widow and mother of four young boys ‎[27]‎.

By 1860, Patrick, aged 74, three daughters and two granddaughters resided together in Bardstown, supporting themselves with shoemaking and seamstressing ‎[28]‎. John W. enlisted in the military and was training at the Cumberland Garrison ‎[29]‎. By 1865, the three daughters and grandaughters had moved to St. Louis ‎[30]‎. Patrick likely died between 1860 when he appears in the census, and 1865 when his daughters have moved away from Bardstown ‎[31]‎.

‎[13]‎ Margaret was born and baptized in Baltimore in 1816. Patrick Donohoo does not appear in the 1816 Baltimore Directory. Catherine was born about 1818 in Bardstown, Kentucky. This leaves a window from 1816 to 1818 for the family to migrate.

The Donohoo family was one of many Catholic families that moved to Bardstown from Baltimore during the same time period. This time period was also when the Archdiocese of Baltimore was sending bishops and priests to open up the Archdiocese of Bardstown and building the St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown.

‎[31]‎ A death record has not been found to date in any county, church or cemetery record. The time period of Patrick's death occurred when that area of Kentucky was heavily entrenched in Civil War battles. It is not surprising that the records are patchy during this time of upheaval. The three daughters would not likely have moved from the area until theor father, whom they had lived with for decades had passed away.

Conflagration! The Bardstown Fire of 1856

Written by Melissa Finlay, 2015

About 11 a.m. on the morning of April 12, 1856, a fire started in the town of Bardstown. The details on how it started were sketchy right from the start. Some reports claimed it started in the chimney of the house of two widowed sisters, spreading to the roof, and then down to rubbish between their home and the abandoned ten-pin-alley next door. Other reports claim the flames began in the rubbish pile and spread to the chimney and roof of the house. Regardless of the true origin of the fire, it devastated the whole community, and the Donohoo family in particular.

The weather was windy on this day, causing the flames to leap and spread to nearby buildings nearly faster than they could be evacuated. The fire wagon was brought out, but was somehow in ill repair and unable to help in the effort at all. The mayor of the city sent out a plea for help from other towns, but none were able to respond in time. Within three hours time, the entire south-east portion of the city was reduced to smoking embers.

\"Where stood stately
edifices before, nothing remains now but
crumbling walls and smouldering ruins.
The devouring element was so swift in
its career, that the citizens, although using
almost superhuman exertions, could not
do anything towards rescuing the con-
tents of the dwellings.\"
‎(\"Immense Conflagration.\" Lebanon Post (Lebanon, KY)‎ 16 April 1856.)

Most families were not even able to salvage any of their household goods from the swift fire. None of the families had insurance to cover their losses. The devastation of the fire was reported throughout Kentucky, and as far away as New York and Chicago. Nearby communities, such as Louisville, called for fundraisers to help the devastated citizens of Bardstown. They formed committees to help with this fundraising effort, and the Catholic Bishop, Bishop Spalding led the way by donating $50 to the cause. The St. Joseph's College in Bardstown donated $100 towards the rebuilding of the Methodist Church, and $100 towards the aid of the orphans and widows.

About 20 families were effected by this fire ‎(this chart, compiled from all the reports listed in sources below, may or may not be accurate, as reports did conflict with each other)‎:

The Donohoo family was keenly effected by this fire; their losses were very high. The home that was indicted as the possible cause of the fire was owned by Michael Donohoo, but resided in by Patrick Donohoo, daughter Mary Donohoo, his widowed daughters Margaret Frilling and Sarah Ann Bishop, grand-daughters Susan and Mary A. Bishop and son John W. Another home reduced to rubble belonged to his third widowed daughter, Catherine Turner and her four sons. She reportedly had just paid her last payment on the home and was unable to retrieve any personal belongings. All told, twelve members of the Donohoo family were left homeless by this fire.

Text: There have been two deaths from
Erysipelas in town since our last issue, Mr.
Lucius Melvin and Mrs. Donohoo, wife of
Mr. Patrick Donohoo. There are several
cases still on hand, but no new ones so
far as we have heard. In that part of the
county between Bardstown and Bloomfield,
which has been so severely afflicted, we un-
derstand that the disease has greatly abated.
