Notes

Shared Note
Mary, Margaret, and Sarah Ann Donohoo were daughters of Patrick and Sarah Donohoo. Discovering the story of these three sisters has been quite intriguing. Aside from short marriages for two of the sisters, ending with the early deaths of their husbands, the sisters lived together their entire lives. Their migrations led them nearly full circle, from Maryland, to Kentucky, St. Louis, Chicago, and finally Washington, D.C. Their story came together because they stayed together, and so their combined records revealed the whole story.

Mary Donohoo was born in 1809 in Baltimore, Maryland, the first daughter and second child of Patrick and Sarah
Donohoo. Margaret Donohoo was born in 1816 in Baltimore, Maryland, the second daughter and fifth child of Patrick and Sarah Donohoo ‎[1]‎. Between the years of 1816 and 1818, the young family migrated to Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky ‎[2]‎. Sarah Ann Donohoo was born about 1823 in Nelson County, Kentucky, the seventh child and fourth daughter of Patrick and Sarah Donohoo ‎[3]‎.

On 14 May 1839, Margaret Donohoo was married to John Theodore Frilling by the Catholic priest ‎[4]‎. Sadly, less than six months after their marriage, John Theodore Frilling passed away at the age of 25. He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky ‎[5]‎. The couple did not have any children during their short marriage.

In 1844, Sarah Ann married William C. Bishop. Her father, Patrick Donohoo acted as bondsmen ‎[6]‎. In 1845, they welcomed their first daughter, Susan ‎(Sudie)‎ Bishop. In 1848, a second daughter, Mary A. Bishop, was born. By 1850, William C. Bishop had died ‎(exact death date unknown)‎.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, Sarah Bishop lived in her parents' home with her two daughters and several siblings, including fellow widowed sister, Margaret Frilling, and single oldest sister, Mary Donohoo ‎[7]‎. The three sisters lived in their parents' home throught the 1860 census as well. Mary, Marg and Sarah work as seamstresses to support the family, along with their father's shoemaking ‎[8]‎.

After the death of their parents, the three sisters moved together to St. Louis, where they lived from 1865-1874. The sisters supported themselves by dressmaking and taking in boarders. They moved residences four times in St. Louis. Throughout her time in St. Louis, Margaret is listed in the city directory as Margaret Frilling, widow of John. Sarah is listed as Sarah Bishop, widow of William C. ‎[9]‎.

The 1870 census shows the family in St. Louis, Missouri. Sarah Bishop, age 42, is head of household. Mary Bishop, age 21, Margt Frilling, age 48, ‎(occupation: mantua maker, i.e. dressmaker [10]‎), Mary Donohoo, age 50, and the Taylor family: Marshall, age 35, born Indiana, Sudie, age 23, and William, age 1, born in Missouri, are all enumerated in the household ‎[11]‎.

It was during the time the sisters lived in St. Louis that Margaret died and was buried the 13 December 1872 in the Calvary Cemetery in that city ‎[12]‎. Her short, two line obituary from the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, simply states: "Deaths. Frilling- In St. Louis, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Bishop, Mrs. Margaret Frilling. ‎[Louisville papers copy]‎"‎[13]‎.

By 1876, the two remaining sisters, along with Sarah Bishop's two daughters, a son-in-law, and two grandchildren, moved to Chicago, Illinois. There, they continued to take in boarders to support themselves ‎[14]‎.

In 1879, Sarah's daughter, Sudie, was widowed, leaving two widows, two single women, and two children in the household ‎[15]‎.

The 1880 Census shows 58 year old, widowed Sarah Bishop as head of household, with daughter Mary Bishop, age 22 and single, Mary Donohoo, sister, age 72 and single, Susie Taylor, widowed, age 28, with children William J. Taylor, age 11, and Sadie L. Taylor, age 8, living at 25 Park ‎(although the city directory for this year places them at 25 Woodbine Pl.)‎, in Chicago, Illinois ‎[16]‎.

By 1884, the family moved to Washington, D.C., although they did not all live in the same household any longer. Sarah Bishop and Mary Donohoo, however, do appear in the 1884 Washington, D.C. city directory at the same address: 1211 I nw ‎[17]‎. In their advanced years, the sisters supported themselves by house cleaning.

On 16 March 1885, Sarah Bishop died at the age of 60 in Washington, D.C. She was buried on 18 March 1885, in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.C ‎[18]‎.

On 13 April 1886, Mary Donohoo died in Washington, D.C. at the age of 79. She outlived her sister Sarah Bishop by nearly exactly a year. She was buried 14 April 1886, in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.C., the same cemetery where her sister was buried ‎[19]‎.

The 1830 U.S. Census for the household of Patrick Donohoo enumerates 1 female under 5 ‎(presumably Elizabeth)‎, 1 female 5-10 ‎(presumably Sarah Ann)‎, and 2 females 10-14 ‎(presumably Catherine and Margaret)‎, and 1 aged 20-29 ‎(presumably Mary)‎.
The girls were likely born before 1810 and 1816, before the family migrated to Kentucky. ‎(see [2]‎)

‎[2]‎ Patrick Donohoo is listed in the 1814 Baltimore City Directory, "Donohoo, Patrick, cordwainer, Saratoga near Charles st". His daughter, Catherine is consistently listed as being born in Kentucky. These two facts give a window of migration for the Donohoo family from Maryland to Kentucky between 1814-1818.

‎[3]‎ Sarah Ann's records give a range of birth years from 1822-1828. At the time of her marriage in 1844, no consent of her father is recorded on any document, suggesting she was of the age of 21 or older, thus suggesting a birth year of 1823 or earlier.

Conflagration! The Bardstown Fire of 1856

Written by Melissa Finlay, 2015

About 11 a.m. on the morning of April 12, 1856, a fire started in the town of Bardstown. The details on how it started were sketchy right from the start. Some reports claimed it started in the chimney of the house of two widowed sisters, spreading to the roof, and then down to rubbish between their home and the abandoned ten-pin-alley next door. Other reports claim the flames began in the rubbish pile and spread to the chimney and roof of the house. Regardless of the true origin of the fire, it devastated the whole community, and the Donohoo family in particular.

The weather was windy on this day, causing the flames to leap and spread to nearby buildings nearly faster than they could be evacuated. The fire wagon was brought out, but was somehow in ill repair and unable to help in the effort at all. The mayor of the city sent out a plea for help from other towns, but none were able to respond in time. Within three hours time, the entire south-east portion of the city was reduced to smoking embers.

\"Where stood stately
edifices before, nothing remains now but
crumbling walls and smouldering ruins.
The devouring element was so swift in
its career, that the citizens, although using
almost superhuman exertions, could not
do anything towards rescuing the con-
tents of the dwellings.\"
‎(\"Immense Conflagration.\" Lebanon Post (Lebanon, KY)‎ 16 April 1856.)

Most families were not even able to salvage any of their household goods from the swift fire. None of the families had insurance to cover their losses. The devastation of the fire was reported throughout Kentucky, and as far away as New York and Chicago. Nearby communities, such as Louisville, called for fundraisers to help the devastated citizens of Bardstown. They formed committees to help with this fundraising effort, and the Catholic Bishop, Bishop Spalding led the way by donating $50 to the cause. The St. Joseph's College in Bardstown donated $100 towards the rebuilding of the Methodist Church, and $100 towards the aid of the orphans and widows.

About 20 families were effected by this fire ‎(this chart, compiled from all the reports listed in sources below, may or may not be accurate, as reports did conflict with each other)‎:

Bardstown Fire Losses

J.C. Matthew: House
Mrs. Turner: House valued $500, on which she had just made last payment, lost all furniture, clothing, etc.
Dooney: 2 houses
Nath'l Wickliffe: Dwelling house valued at $450, occupied by Mr. Gossin who lost all belongings
Mrs. Gebway ‎(Widow Gibson)‎: House, furniture, valued at $2,000
C.W. Hill: Dwelling and office
McCoon: House
Methodist Church: Valued $2,000
J.C. Wickliffe: Residence, furniture, valued at $3,000
Old school house
Alex Moore: Residence, furniture, valued $650-$800
Mrs. McAters ‎(Widow McAtee)‎: Residence, furniture, valued $400
M. Donohue: House in which father, etc. resided, lost most household goods, house valued $650
Frien: Old barn & stables
James Hite: House, ten-pin-alley ‎(Old Green Tavern)‎, valued $750
I.C. Mattingly: Frame tenement adjoining residence, valued $500
Rev. R.A. Abel: Dwelling house valued at $500, occupied by Robert Mattingly who lost all personal belongings
Doom and Brother: Frame house, double tenement valued at $500, resided in by Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Jacobson
G.W. Hite: Dwelling, furniture, etc., valued at $12,600
Dr. B.R. McCown: House, furniture, provisions, valued $4,000
Mrs. Caldwell ‎(formerly Miss Breckenridge)‎: Dwelling house valued $400-$500; occupants Mr. Thomas Neal, Mrs. Cotton, Mrs. Cox lost all belongings

The Donohoo family was keenly effected by this fire; their losses were very high. The home that was indicted as the possible cause of the fire was owned by Michael Donohoo, but resided in by Patrick Donohoo, daughter Mary Donohoo, his widowed daughters Margaret Frilling and Sarah Ann Bishop, grand-daughters Susan and Mary A. Bishop and son John W. Another home reduced to rubble belonged to his third widowed daughter, Catherine Turner and her four sons. She reportedly had just paid her last payment on the home and was unable to retrieve any personal belongings. All told, twelve members of the Donohoo family were left homeless by this fire.

March B. Taylor of Lafayette, Ind., then
colonel of the 10th Indiana Volunteers.
After Col. Taylor's death in 1877 she
came to Washington and entered the

bureau, where she was employed until
the time of her death.
Two children survive her, a son, Wil-
liam J. Taylor, and a daughter, Mrs. J.
H. Johnson, jr., both of this city.
